The legendary Kathak artist Pandit Birju Maharaj Ji’s soul departed from the mortal world in January 2022. Though it has been months since his demise, his mere mention in a conversation brings back memories of his work, and the stories he used to tell with his Kathak performances. Honoring the late Padma Vibushan awardee Maharaji, a series is being made on his collection, which includes his Kathak poetries, thumri, compositions, and much more. Pandit Ji’s student and a prestigious Kathak performer herself Paramita Bhattacharyya will be working on the series which is a tribute to the legendary artist.
Speaking about the same in an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Paramita Bhattacharyya told us, “I feel very emotional when talking about this opportunity. Recently, I received a gem from Maharaj ji’s invaluable collection that Kalashram has given access to, considering the thirst of Kathak artists like me to know and work more for Kathak.”
